Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite major advances in pharmacological and device-related therapy, the prognosis of many cardiovascular diseases remains poor. The Cardiac Energetics and Immunology group is a dedicated assembly of researchers located at the Medical University of Graz that conducts basic science studies to unravel mechanisms underlying highly prevalent cardiac diseases such as myocardial infarction and heart failure, in particular in the context of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. By promoting the understanding of basic disease mechanisms, we hope to accelerate the identification of novel therapeutic approaches to mitigate cardiac injury following myocardial infarction and to slow the progression of heart failure. We are proud to be funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Austrian Society of Cardiology (ÖKG), the Austrian Diabetes Association (ÖDG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation.
